To the Editor:
The McHenry Township Road District is being sued for overtaxing us and accumulating obscene surpluses. One might wonder how it happens that somehow they end up with extra millions of dollars on hand.
The way it happens is that, year after year, they overbudget line items and also create different reserves for contingency funds, money that doesn’t get spent. And then, the following year, when they present their new budget to the board to set the levy, they proudly state that it is only some percent greater than last year, when the cost of living has gone up an even greater amount.
What they don’t volunteer is that they didn’t spend a lot of last year's budgeted dollars and that they finished the year with several hundreds of thousands of dollars more than they started with and that that will probably happen again.
Some argue that it’s still our money and that it’s in the bank and there if we need it. What they also don’t tell you is that it is the unchangeable law that governmental activity will expand to consume available funds and that we’re nuts to let them have that money to play with.
We need to get rid of the flawed system that lets a single individual with no oversight or supervision run our multi-million-dollar road district.
Vote yes in November to consolidate the McHenry Township Road District into the primary township board.
