To the Editor:
Reducing taxes has been the recurring theme for some time now and little has been done to move in that direction. Now, evidence is mounting that the tax burden is only likely to get higher based on a couple of things: the new Federal GOP tax law, and the shrinking population in McHenry County.
For too long, we were able to coast as growth was consistent and it was easy to keep things the same for a long time. That time seems to be coming to an end. While there are many things we can do, one thing we definitely should do is create more affordably diverse housing in McHenry County so that lower middle class families, single income families, and families just starting out, can afford to move here and take advantage of our excellent schools, diverse geography, and proximity to outdoor activities that promote health and well-being (nature and rural communities within our borders).
For too long, there has been an unspoken bias toward affluence and whiteness. It seems we are going to start paying the price for that.
