Route 176 closes after man drives SUV into river, Marengo fire official says

Authorities shut down Route 176 near a bridge crossing the Kishwaukee River after an elderly man drove his SUV off the road and into the water, Marengo Fire Protection District officials said.

About 1:30 p.m. Thursday, a man driving west on Route 176 crossed the bridge over the south branch of the Kishwaukee, left the road just east of the bridge and crashed into about 4 feet of water, Marengo Fire Protection District Lt. Noel Gaines said.

When emergency crews arrived, they found the man conscious inside the car. Authorities called a tow truck from nearby Marengo Auto Group.

“We pulled the car to the shore and extricated the patient from the car,” Gaines said.

The man was taken to Centegra Hospital – Huntley with minor injuries.

Authorities closed the road for about 40 minutes, Gaines said. The road reopened about 2 p.m. Thursday.
