With three starts under his belt, Marian Central graduate Chris Streveler will move to the backup quarterback role for the Canadian Football League’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The team announced Thursday that Matt Nichols will return to starting quarterback in Saturday’s game against the BC Lions. Nichols had been the starter throughout the preseason before he was sidelined with a knee injury eight days prior to the season opener. Nichols was Winnipeg’s starter during most of the previous two seasons as well.
Streveler, who finished his college career at South Dakota in December, led the Bombers to a 1-2 record in his three starts. He threw for 570 yards with a 62.8 completion percentage. His six passing touchdowns are tied for the CFL lead and his 183 rushing yards are fifth in the league.
He became the first CFL rookie to start a season-opener at QB straight out of college since Anthony Calvillo started the opener for the Las Vegas Posse in 1994.
