McHenry Community High School District 156 will officially hire Jon Niemic as head football coach for the 2018 season, according to the school board agenda, pending board approval at Monday’s meeting.

Niemic will be hired retroactive to June 21, when he took over for former coach Nat Zunkel, who resigned last month following domestic battery charges.

Niemic served as McHenry’s offensive coordinator for the past two seasons. He has previous head coaching experience at North High School in Sioux City, Iowa.

Also pending school board approval, George Keenan will be hired as head girls swim coach at McHenry.

Keenan previously coached the boys and girls swimming and diving teams at Huntley. He resigned abruptly in December 2014 following a disagreement with former Huntley athletic director Chris Rozanski in which Keenan said Rozanski “accused us of trying to leave a kid at a swim meet.”

Keenan has also coached various club swim teams in the area, including the Woodstock Dolphins and Mundelein Mustangs. He worked closely with Valerie Tarazi – a record-breaking swimmer for the Crystal Lake co-op team and the 2018 Northwest Herald Female Athlete of the Year – over the course of her youth and high school career.
