Cary-Grove baseball coach Don Sutherland is resigning after 31 seasons, pending Community High School District 155 Board approval at Tuesday’s meeting.
Sutherland has been the Trojans’ varsity baseball coach since 1987-88. His teams have won five regional titles, two sectional titles and finished as Class 4A state runner-up in 2009.
Sutherland already had resigned from his position as defensive coordinator for the football team. He coached football for 39 years, serving as defensive coordinator for most of that time. He has coached various sports – baseball, football, boys basketball, girls basketball and wrestling – since arriving at Cary-Grove in 1978.
“I will forever be grateful to Community High School District 155 for giving [me] the opportunity to coach in such a great community for many years,” Sutherland responded Friday via text message when called for comment. “I highly valued each year I was able to coach, because the coaches you coach with become your best friends, and I treasured the opportunity to coach each player I coached, because you love those players like your own sons and daughters.”
Sutherland also noted that he will miss the opposing coaches, who provided healthy confrontations on the playing field that “every person (young and old) needs to keep growing as a person.”
Sutherland won more than 600 games in his varsity baseball coaching career.
Sutherland’s resignation was one of a number of coaching changes listed on the D155 school board agenda. All changes are pending board approval Tuesday.
Mark Leverentz is resigning as boys soccer coach at Crystal Lake Central. Jay Schwarzrock will take over the position.
Mark Lewis will take over as varsity girls soccer coach at Prairie Ridge. Lewis also is entering his first season as Wolves boys soccer coach this fall. He previously served as assistant coach to former girls soccer head coach Andre Watson.
Amanda Schuetzle will become the Crystal Lake South girls tennis coach. Longtime coach Don Nead retired last month. Schuetzle had been the Central girls tennis coach since 2014. She has two daughters, Hannah and Sarah Schuetzle, who will be juniors on South’s tennis team this fall.
William Stastny will take over Prairie Ridge boys tennis, replacing former coach Jim Benson.
