A children’s education center might be coming soon to McHenry’s downtown after the Planning and Zoning Commission approved plans for Snapology on Wednesday.
Joseph and Vanessa Quinn, of Spring Grove, want to open a science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics center at 1112 N. Green St. – near Buddyz Pizzeria and Kiera Confections – that will offer educational programming to kids between ages 2 and 14, according to city documents.
The property is part of a mixed-use development on the corner of North Green Street and Waukegan Road in the River Place Luxury Residences building.
The programming features Legos, K’nex blocks and technology-based learning to help kids learn to code and build robots. Other activities include using household items to make slime and teaching the science behind such experiments, said Joseph Quinn, the Spring Grove-based developer of the project.
“At Snapology, we believe children are meant to learn through play,” Joseph Quinn said. “When children are engaged in interactive, hands-on learning activities, their creativity flourishes, and they show an increased interest in school.”
The company plans to offer birthday party packages, after-school programs, summer camps and field trip opportunities at the Snapology Discovery Center, according to city documents.
Hours may adjust depending on community response, but Snapology plans to be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, Joseph Quinn said.
“During the day, especially in the school year, you will likely have preschoolers coming in during the day, and we will hold camps to help preschoolers learn STEAM concepts,” Joseph Quinn said. “Then we would do our after-school programs. ... Throughout the entire year, we will do birthday parties and field trips. In the summer, we will hold our summer camps.”
The programs are aimed at teaching kids to work together as well as learn the curriculum, he said.
“One thing Snapology really prides itself in is the children are to work in pairs or on teams,” he said.
The center will have a small retail shop on site.
Snapology was founded in Pennsylvania in 2010 and has 55 locations around the world.
The McHenry City Council must give approval for the plan in the coming weeks. The Quinns hope to open the center by late August or September.
