To the Editor:
Anyone who watches the Republicans will understand the need for Constitutional checks and balance as intended by the drafters. Right now, the President controls all three branches of government and the Republicans in Congress, with one or two exceptions, don't have the fortitude to stand up to him.
That is one reason why the highly contested race in the 6th district is so important. The race between incumbent Republican Peter Roskam and Democratic newcomer Sean Casten and many close races throughout the country could restore to our country the intent of the Constitution.
Besides restoration of Article 1 powers, it is important that substantive issues be studied so that the 6th can be represented by the best person.
Roskam utilizing huge dollars provided by the wealthy and conservative PACs has flooded the airwaves with misleading statements, apparently a tact he learned from the President. In one commercial, he says the tax bill he was instrumental in writing provided for a middle class tax cut.
This ignores the fact that the vast majority of the money has gone to the wealthy and corporations who have used it to buy back stock making the big shareholders even wealthier. He also added a provision which limits the deductibility of property taxes.
As property taxes go up, their deductibility goes down, thanks to Roskam. He also claims to support better health care for more people. Funny from a guy who voted several times to kill the ACA and take health care away from millions. He is now working to cut Medicare and programs that help the poor get coverage.
Space constraints do not allow me to go into the specific Casten positions. His detailed views on issues can be found on his web site. I will say he is committed to fixing the problems in the tax bill, including the tax deductibility issue. He is a strong supporter of Medicare and will work to improve the ACA rather then destroy it.
A vote for Casten is a vote for the best person as well as a vote for the future of our country.
