To the Editor:
To summarize, the president puts on a disgraceful and shameful performance in Helsinki, undermining our national intelligence services. The Justice Department indicts 12 Russian military agents for hacking into Democratic Party computers as well as Illinois’ State Board of Elections. The arrest of Maria Butina in what the FBI called a “Russian influence operation” comes complete with an affidavit that a Republican congressional leader had secured a back channel to the Kremlin. Republicans now are faced with two issues.
First, there is a strong possibility that members of the Republican Party benefited from the Russian manipulation of our election and even sought out Russian assistance. Second, the party’s unwavering support of the president seems to indicate that it’s no big deal if Russia manipulated the election, so long as the GOP benefited.
So the day of reckoning has come for all Republican candidates running for office in the midterm elections. Who do you stand with, America or Donald Trump? Every Republican candidate for office should be prepared to answer that question.
