Wonder Lake Fire Chief Theodore Sorensen faces a single battery charge after police said he “chest bumped” one of the department’s battalion chiefs.

McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Sorensen, of the 7400 block of Wooded Shore Drive, on Wednesday. He posted bond shortly after and was released, records show.

The incident happened July 9 at the Wonder Lake Fire Station, 4300 E. Wonder Lake Road, McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Sandra Rogers said in an email.

Drugs and alcohol are not considered to be a factor, she said.

Sorensen is charged with battery, a misdemeanor offense typically punishable by less than a year in jail.

Attempts to reach Sorensen and representatives from the fire district were unsuccessful.

The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District is a part-time, on-call department. Sorensen has worked there since 1979 and was earning $18,000 a year, according to the Illinois watchdog group Better Government Association.

He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 13.
