A Wonder Lake man will begin a five-year prison sentence for repeatedly hitting a woman with a leather belt, according to a news release from McHenry County State’s Attorney Patrick Kenneally.
In October 2017, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched for a well-being check. A subsequent investigation revealed that 41-year-old Edgar A. Sivaja hit a woman with a belt. He accepted a negotiated plea Friday and was convicted on a felony domestic battery charge.
Sivaja was on parole at the time for a previous aggravated domestic battery conviction in a case that involved the same victim.
In August 2014, Sivaja was accused of cutting the woman’s leg with a knife, punching her in the back of the head, burning her leg with a hot lighter and biting her left wrist, a criminal complaint from the time shows.
He was ordered to serve four years in prison for the 2014 conviction.
In 2011, the woman filed an order of protection against Sivaja, claiming that he choked her until she blacked out and threatened to harm members of her family.
The domestic battery case was investigated by the sheriff’s office and prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Randi Freese.
