To the Editor:
I want to express my thanks for the recent article in the Northwest Herald on water safety (“Authorities stress water safety,” Aug. 8, page A3).
As a member of Illinois Wisconsin Search Dogs, our job is to not only search for the missing but also those who have drowned and are probably underwater.
The dogs do not take the place of divers. They are merely another tool to narrow the area down. In the past 32 years of our existence, we never have been called to look for a drowning victim who was wearing a life jacket or personal flotation device.
If you get in a boat, wear one. Moms and dads, lifeguards can’t keep eyes on your children 100 percent of the time. Stay off your phones and watch your children. Fishing from shore with your young child? Make sure they have a life jacket on.
