Letter: Teachers' contracts should reflect real-world reality

To the Editor:

I will probably lose a few friends by writing this, but one wonders what world our wonderful teachers and negotiators live in.

Do you get cost-of-living increases? A one-time $800 stipend? Credit for work elsewhere? Twelve sick days at full pay, which can accumulate? Four days of leave at full pay? (The salary ranges aren’t even mentioned.)

Today, most workers get few, if any, benefits, vacations shrink and are gone if not used, and pay is as little as possible. If an individual can be hired for less, they are.

While I am at it, when are schools going to be run year-round?

This just can’t continue because we can’t afford it. I guess we all should have been teachers.
