A Crystal Lake man is charged with driving under the influence after crashing into a school bus Thursday afternoon.
DeKalb County Sheriff’s officials said in a news release that Paul Koontz, 30, crashed into a school bus on Allen and New Lebanon roads and his car was wedged under the rear of the bus. Hampshire fire officials helped Koontz out of the car, and Koontz then was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elgin.
Only one child was on the bus, along with the driver, at the time of the crash, the release said. The driver and child were uninjured and both vehicles were towed from the scene, according to the release.
Koontz is charged with DUI and failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash, the release said. He was released on a recognizance bond with his own signature.
St. Joseph’s nursing staff declined comment on whether Koontz remained at the hospital or his current condition, citing HIPPA.
The incident remains under investigation by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
