Springfield prosecutor nominated for U.S. attorney

SPRINGFIELD – President Donald Trump has nominated Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser to be U.S. attorney for the central district of Illinois.

The 48-year-old Milhiser has been state’s attorney since 2010. The U.S. Senate must consent to the Republican’s appointment before he takes over the 46-county central district.

U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth of Illinois issued a joint statement praising the selection. The Democrats said Milhiser had been recommended by the nonpartisan screening panel they had established to evaluate candidates.

U.S. Attorney James Lewis retired in December 2016. The job currently is held on an interim basis by John Childress. He previously was in charge of the criminal division in the office.
