77-year-old Wonder Lake man found dead at home

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a death in Wonder Lake.

The Wonder Lake Police Department, Wonder Lake Fire Protection District and sheriff’s office responded Sunday afternoon to the 8600 block of West Sunset Avenue after a report of a missing person, according to police scanner traffic.

Emergency personnel found the person, a 77-year-old Wonder Lake man, dead less than 20 minutes later, neighbors said.

Neighbor Rick Hall said police knocked on his door to see whether he had seen his elderly neighbor that afternoon, Hall said.

“About 15 minutes later, he came out and said, ‘We found him,’ ” Hall said. ‘I asked if it was good, and he said, ‘No, It’s not good.’ ”

First responders found the man at the bottom of his in-ground swimming pool, neighbor Don Hall said.

The two brothers had known the couple for more than 30 years, the Halls said.

“We hung out with the guy,” Rick Hall said. “Went to the Fourth of July parades with them. They were very nice people. When my dad passed away, they were right [here] with lasagna and heating trays.”

The man had Parkinson’s disease but was independent, cut his own lawn and would walk to the store himself, Rick Hall said.

Wonder Lake police directed calls to the sheriff’s office. Sheriff’s deputies were not available to provide details on the incident.
