Letter: More accountability from Lake County

To the Editor:

Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor has stepped down because of his unethical use of taxpayer funds, but his Republican allies have some explaining to do. Consider these facts:

• The board has no disclosure rules; they can award contracts to friends and family without being transparent about relationships.

• Board members can accept donations from those doing business with the county.

• The board lost millions on a no-bid contract and have resisted an audit of that transaction.

The board voted to stop videotaping Finance Committee meetings, where it makes decisions about taxpayer money.

At an Aug. 10 meeting, the vice chair of the Finance Committee said: “I don’t like the policy about disclosing every donor and all that, every contract.”

What happened to government accountability? What are they hiding? We deserve better. There are good candidates challenging these GOP incumbents, and I encourage my fellow residents to learn more about them.
