No charges filed after Monday night standoff near Crystal Lake

An incident that caused an hours-long standoff Monday night at the corner of Fair Oaks and Charlotte avenues won’t result in charges, police said Tuesday.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched about 8 p.m. Monday to the 400 block of Charlotte Avenue on the edge of Crystal Lake for a reported domestic incident.

Officers heard a loud bang when they arrived, police said.

“Upon our arrival, deputies heard a loud bang and thought it might have been a gunshot,” McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Sandra Rogers said in an email. “It was later identified as a windshield being broken.”

A Nixle alert from the sheriff’s office sent about 9 p.m. asked residents to avoid the area because of “police activity.”

The alert was issued for the public’s safety until it could be determined a firearm was not discharged, which none were, Rogers said.

A 25-year-old man was the only one home and had barricaded himself in the house.

He came out several hours later and was taken to the hospital for mental health reasons, Rogers said.

No one will be charged in the incident, she said.
