Crystal Lake soon will be home to McHenry County’s first Amoco gas station.
The gas station and convenience store will occupy a vacant space at the intersection of Route 14 and McHenry Avenue in the coming weeks.
The site formerly housed a Gas Depot. New signage was installed at the pumps this week.
“We don’t have an opening date, but I know they’re working to comply with all the permits for occupancy,” said Katie Cowlin, assistant city planner. “They’re just cleaning up the last little details. They should be opening soon. We just have a couple items to address.”
Cowlin said she’s happy Amoco is coming back to the northern Illinois market.
“They re-emerged after closing a number of them years ago. They’re coming back around,” Cowlin said.
Cowlin said Route 14 is home to many new businesses, including a Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen that will be built on the eastern corner of Route 14 and McHenry Avenue, across the street from the Amoco.
Cowlin said construction of the restaurant “should be underway shortly.”
The site is the former home of Coventry Motors. The old Coventry Motors buildings will be demolished, according to city documents.
The new restaurant, known for spicy fried chicken and biscuits, will include a drive-thru and outdoor seating area.
