High school sports roundup for Wednesday, Sept. 5

Marian Central’s girls volleyball team beat Johnsburg, 31-29, 25-19, in nonconference play Wednesday to spoil the Skyhawks’ home opener in Johnsburg.

Lilli Leggett led the Hurricanes (5-8) offensively with seven kills and defensively with eight digs. Issy Nick provided
four kills, seven digs and two aces, and Grace Graff chipped in 15 assists.

Shannon Flynn and Hayley Schmidt led the Skyhawks (3-5) with five kills apiece, and Adisyn Illg tallied 19 assists and
two aces. Morgan Madsen and Megan Madsen finished with four kills each. Morgan Madsen added two blocks.

North Boone 2, Harvard 0: At Poplar Grove, the Hornets (0-4) lost a nonconference match to the Vikings, 25-15, 25-7. Hannah Saucedo and Michaela Froehlich each had a kill for Harvard. Haley Tittle had
two aces.

Belvidere North 2, Hampshire 0: At Belvidere, the Whip-Purs (8-4-1) lost to the Blue Thunder, 25-23, 25-22, in nonconference play.


Huntley 173, McHenry 206: At Pinecrest in Huntley, Katie Matustik fired a 2-over-par 38 to lead the Red Raiders to a Fox Valley Conference victory. Taylor Stephenson (44), Nina Shaffer (45) and Molly Baker (46) rounded out the scoring for Huntley.

Sarah Fergus led the Warriors with a 41, followed by Carly Wolf (51), Alex Wirch (56) and Sydney Shea (58).


Woodstock North 3, Antioch 1: At Woodstock, Jacob Hernandez, Cole Dillon and Eliel Reynoso scored for the Thunder (6-0-3) in a nonconference win. Reynoso and Bartek Scheibe added assists, and Aj Guanci made six saves.

St. Viator 4, Marian Central 0: At Arlington Heights, Caleb Taylor made 10 saves for the Hurricanes (0-7, 0-2) in an East Suburban Catholic Conference loss.


Tuesday’s results  

Cary-Grove triangular: At Hickory Nut Grove in Cary, Jadon Conroy, Ian Geisler and Jeremy Roe took the top three spots for the Huntley boys to sweep a triangular against Cary-Grove and Prairie Ridge.

Conroy finished first in 17:09.16, followed by Geisler (17:09.27) and Roe (17:09.42). 

C-G’s Derek Warren (17:30) took fourth, and Huntley’s Chris Simek (17:41) was fifth.

In the girls race, C-G’s Morgan Dieschbourg finished first in 20:50, followed by Huntley’s Bailey Wilk (21:05) and Madison Overly (21:07) as the Raiders went 2-0. Prairie Ridge’s Chloe Gale (21:09) was fourth, and Huntley’s Emily Glass (21:25.79) was fifth.

Dundee-Crown triangular: At Randall Oaks in West Dundee, D-C’s Adam Swanson won in 16:53, and teammate Lucas Janikowski (17:19) finished second. D-C won with
38 points, edging Crystal Lake South
(38 points) with a faster sixth runner.

South’s Matthew Brown (17:41) was third and Christopher Davis (17:59) was fourth. McHenry was led by Carlos Montes (18:01) in fifth.

In the girls race, the Gators took the top six spots, led by Mackenzie Aldridge (22:13) in first place. Olivia Beckwith (22:21) finished second.

Jacobs triangular: At Sunset Park in Lake in the Hills, Jacobs’ Mark Lemke won the race with a time of 16:43 to lead the Golden Eagles to an FVC sweep over Crystal Lake Central and Hampshire. Brett Bognar (17:09) was third for Jacobs.

Crystal Lake Central’s Keegan Smalley (16:59) finished second, and Hampshire’s Aiden Moseley (17:45) and Tommy Croissant (17:46) were fourth and fifth.

Hampshire beat Crystal Lake Central, 25-34, to split the triangular.

In the girls race, Jacobs’ Elisabeth Kania won with a time of 20:08 as the Eagles beat Central and Hampshire. Central’s Kylie Smith (20:24) was runner-up, and Becca Orvis (21:52) was fourth.
