A man who family referred to Monday as a “sexual predator right under our noses” will spend more than a decade in prison for sexually abusing and assaulting several female relatives.

Edgar Arana Sr. took a final glance at his family Monday as a sheriff’s deputy led him out of the courtroom to begin a 15-year prison sentence.

The 73-year-old pleaded guilty to felony charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and predatory criminal sexual assault in connection with several open cases against him. The reported abuse dated as far back as 2008, charging records show.

McHenry County Judge Sharon Prather accepted the plea deal and sentenced the former Lake in the Hills man to a total 15 years in prison.

Arana could be eligible for parole after about 11 years. However, prosecutors could seek to have him committed in a treatment facility as a sexually violent person at that time.

Several of Arana’s family members chose to stand across from Arana as they read statements that described him as a “onetime beloved father and grandfather.”

“I justified my abuse for 10 years before I ever breathed a word of it to anyone else,” one victim said.

Another victim wrote that Arana’s abuse made her sometimes want “to scream bad words,” and said she “really wants [him] to apologize.”

Prosecutors agreed to dismiss child pornography charges filed in 2017 that stemmed from dates in 2011 and 2016.

Two girls have been registered with the Center for Missing and Exploited Children, in the event illegal images of them show up elsewhere.
