High school girls golf: Crystal Lake Central co-op wins 9th straight county title

BULL VALLEY — Crystal Lake Central co-op's Kat Bevill felt the pressure to perform as she walked to the first tee Tuesday at Boone Creek.

"As a senior and a captain, it's a tough spot," Bevill said. "You want to perform and you want to make everybody happy."

For the ninth year in a row, Central co-op came away all smiles at the McHenry County Girls Golf Tournament. The Tigers finished with a team score of 164 in the nine-hole shortened event, defeating runner-up Huntley by 11 shots en route to their ninth county championship since 2010.

Huntley junior Katie Matustik earned medalist honors with a 1-over-par 36 in the 10-team meet. The Red Raiders were second with a 175 and Marian Central (181) was third.

"It's surreal," said Bevill, a four-year varsity golfer. "I'm so proud of our team. They all came through today. Everybody played as good as they could, with the chaos at the beginning of the round. We all played our hearts out today."

The county meet, normally an 18-hole event, was shortened to nine holes after a previously planned event was running late. Coaches gathered and determined to play only nine holes with the slim chance of finishing before dark.

Central co-op – made up of golfers from Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake South and Cary-Grove – had three of the top four medalists. C-G junior Molly Lyne, last year's county champion, was runner-up with a 3-over 38.

Bevill and Renata Petersen took third and fourth, respectively, with 39s, and Arden Podpora (48) rounded out the scoring for the Tigers. All three go to Crystal Lake Central.

"To have that kind of a streak, it just shows overall as a team we work really well together," Lyne said. "It's good to see us improving. We've definitely improved from last season. Losing (2018 graduate Rylie Schurter), I think it motivated us to all become better."

Lyne, who took third at the Class 2A state meet as a freshman and tied for 12th a year ago, was even through eight holes before a triple bogey on the par-4 No. 9. Still, the junior feels like she's having her best individual season yet.

Central co-op has won all five tournaments it has played in so far and is a perfect 4-0 in duals.

"I think the team is playing well," Lyne said. "Kat's been playing well, and Renata has been showing a lot of improvement, and so have our No. 4s and 5s. There's nothing but positives to take away for the future."

Matustik, who had never placed at the county meet before Tuesday, surprised herself by finishing first. She decided to put away her driver and focus on staying in the fairway. The strategy paid off.

She finished with six pars and a birdie on the par-4 No. 3.

"I thought about the course and didn't really need to play my driver," Matustik said. "I just hit distance clubs that I needed to hit, made the greens and it worked really well. My drives can go pretty far, but sometimes they're to the right or to the left a little bit."

Also earning medals were Jacobs' Roslyn Leitner (fifth place, 42) and Lauren Kempf (sixth, 42), Huntley's Nina Shaffer (seventh, 43), Prairie Ridge's Morgan Taylor (eighth, 43), Richmond-Burton's Lauryn Davis (ninth, 43), and Marian Central's Lauren McNulty (10th, 43), Meghan Frank (11th, 43), and Huntley's Taylor Stephenson (12th, 46).
