High school sports roundup for Tuesday, Sept. 11

Oscar Escorza scored off an assist from Caleb Warmbier in the second half to lift Woodstock past Fenwick, 1-0, in their U.S. Navy Bracket second-round game at the PepsiCo Showdown in Woodstock.

Sergio Alvarez had 11 saves in goal for the Streaks (9-2).

Woodstock plays in the bracket semifinals on Saturday and then plays its final PepsiCo game on Championship Sunday at Robert Morris College on Sept. 23.

Wheaton Adacemy 4, Crystal Lake South 0: At Wheaton in the PepsiCo Showdown, Wheaton Academy (9-0) still has not allowed a goal this season. The Gators (8-1-1) suffered their first loss of the season, coming in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Army Bracket.

Crystal Lake Central 2, Joliet Central 0: At Crystal Lake in the PepsiCo Showdown, Billy Cummings scored minutes after halftime to give the Tigers a lead. Jairo Aguilar had the assist.

Later in the second half, Brock Buetow scored on his second rebound attempt after the Steelmen goalkeeper blocked his first two shots. Joseph Perez made seven saves for Central (4-2-1) in the quarterfinal win in the U.S. Coast Guard Bracket.

Wheaton Warrenville South 2, Huntley 1: At Huntley in the PepsiCo Showdown consolation bracket, the Red Raiders nearly won their first match of the season in a shootout. Joey Stout scored for Huntley (0-8), assisted by Josh Guyer in the 76th minute.

McHenry 2, Hampshire 1: At Hampshire, trailing 1-0 in the first half, McHenry received a red card and played with 10 men the rest of the way. The Warriors (4-2-2, 1-0 FVC) still found two goals in the second half to hand Hampshire (5-1-1, 0-1) its first loss.

Dundee-Crown 1, Lake Zurich 0: At Lake Zurich, Arnol Batres scored the lone goal for the Chargers (6-1-1) in the 18th minute. Daniel Perez provided the assist. D-C goalkeeper Damian Smiech made four saves.

Libertyville 6, Cary-Grove 0: At Libertyville, C-G’s Nick Reineking made four saves in a nonconference loss.

GIRLS TENNIS

Huntley 4, Cary-Grove 3: At Huntley, the Red Raiders’ top three doubles teams turned in victories to help edge Cary-Grove in FVC play. Huntley’s Riley Conradt and Michelle Barnvos defeated C-G’s Karina Los and Alina Krembuszewski, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles.

Huntley’s Meghan Fenske and Gabbi Barnvos won at No. 2 doubles. Gabby Kosowski and Kylie Phommasack won at No. 3 doubles. Carina Bowman provided Huntley (12-5, 3-1) its only singles victory at No. 3 singles.

C-G’s Bethany Marshall defeated Ruhi Gulati at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-4. Kaitlin Warner won at No. 2 singles. C-G’s Grace O'Malley and Olivia Schladt won at No. 4 doubles.

Jacobs 7, McHenry 0: At McHenry, the Golden Eagles swept the Warriors. Lindsay Cunningham, Brianna Japkowski and Lindsey Taylor each won singles matches in two sets.

Jacobs’ Ramya Nissankula and Rebecca Mudge won at No. 1 doubles. Kaya Trumbo and Isha Desai won at No. 2 doubles, Katherine Neruda and Tania Vesselinova won at No. 3 doubles and Carolyn Atkinson and Angelina Adame won at No. 4 doubles.

Crystal Lake South 6, Hampshire 1: At Hampshire, the Gators swept all four doubles matches in a win over the Whip-Purs.

Evelyn Smith and Katie Rokusek won at No. 2 doubles, Tennille Redd and Abby Enck won at No. 3 doubles and Dhruvi Mehta and Sam Molyneaux won at No. 4 doubles. Hannah Schuetzle and Sarah Schuetzle won by forfeit after an injury to Hampshire’s No. 1 doubles team.

Skylar Olsen swept the No. 1 singles match for South (3-3, 1-2 FVC). Mallory Ellers defeated Hampshire’s Michelle Mariaca, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. Hampshire’s Shannon Lukaszuk won at No. 2 singles by forfeit.

Prairie Ridge 4, Dundee-Crown 3: At Carpentersville, Prairie Ridge’s top three doubles teams won matches in an FVC victory.

Madison Ljunggren and Kaitlyn Theil swept the No. 1 doubles match, Georgie Durrant and Colette Reiche won at No. 2 doubles, and Lauren Pokonosky and Sarah Pollastrini won at No. 3 doubles. At No. 1 singles, the Wolves’ Macy Biggam defeated Sandy Perez, 6-3, 6-0.

D-C’s Lizbeth Tinajero beat Halie Collins, 7-6 (5), 6-2, at No. 2 singles. Olivia Gard won at No. 3 singles. The Chargers’ Danielle Hrinowich and Mary Domich won at No. 4 doubles.

Woodstock North 5, Woodstock 2: At Woodstock North, the Thunder won all three singles matches in a victory against their crosstown rivals. Aly Cullotta, Sophia Ferru and Lydia Dunker each won in singles.

North’s Cassandra Howell and Kirsten Morey won at No. 2 doubles. Jasmin Carbajal and Mariela Perez narrowly defeated Woodstock’s Emma Martin and Sarah Caspari, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles.

For Woodstock, Meghan Sutter and Alex Norgard beat North’s Lesly Guarneros and Jenny Garcia, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles. The Streaks’ Sarah Cornell and Grace Cochrane won at No. 4 doubles.

VOLLEYBALL

Cary-Grove 2, Hampshire 0: At Cary-Grove, Lauren Passaglia led C-G with 12 assists in a win over Hampshire, 25-17, 25-15. Passaglia also had two aces and two blocks.

Jenna Splitt added six kills and Kate Selsky had 10 digs for C-G (6-7, 3-3 FVC).

Hampshire’s Riley Seagren had four kills and a block. Jacey Lambert added three kills and Sam Rosetti had 11 assists for Hampshire (8-6-1, 2-4).

Crystal Lake Central 2, Crystal Lake South 0: At Crystal Lake, Madde Blake had six kills and eight digs as the Tigers (10-1, 5-1) defeated the Gators in their FVC match.

Maddy McCormick had eight digs and three aces, Camryn Hausler had four kills, six assists and three blocks and Grace Levin had 12 assists.

Burlington Central 2, Marengo 1: At Burlington, Hannah Ritter and Bailey Bertrand each provided eight kills for Marengo in a KRC loss, 14-25, 25-22, 25-19. Lillie Simons had five kills and four blocks. Abi Vito had 23 assists and two kills, while Kaetlyn Jeschke had 13 digs.

Johnsburg 2, Woodstock North 0: At Woodstock, Johnsburg earned the KRC victory, 25-19, 26-24. Adi Illg led Johnsburg with 13 assists. Rayna Wilkinson came up with two key aces. Sheridan Milewski provided five kills.

Brooke Amann led North (5-5, 2-1) with 19 kills and added two aces. Kendra Bacon had three aces and two kills.

Jacobs 2, Dundee-Crown 0: At Carpentersville, Tai Ramirez had 10 kills and six digs as the Golden Eagles defeated the Chargers in their FVC match 25-21, 25-21.

Rachel Kaczorow had 21 assists, seven digs and two blocks. Kristen Wilson had three kills and two blocks.

D-C (1-10, 0-6) was led by MacKenzie Field with six kills, one ace and one block. Jenna Brown has 19 assists and one ace.

Richmond-Burton 2, Harvard 0: At Richmond, the Rockets got five kills apiece from Sammy and Jordan Duncan in their KRC win over the Hornets 25-13, 25-11.

Kaitlyn Suhr had three kills and seven assists, Jesse Klicker had nine assists.

Desiree Brady had four kills and an ace for the Hornets (0-11, 0-2). Michaela Froehlich had three kills.

Joliet Catholic 2, Marian Central 0: At Woodstock, Issy Nick had four kills and eight digs for the Hurricanes in their East Suburban Catholic Conference loss, 25-12, 25-21.

Lille Leggett had three kills and Grace Graff had 12 assists for Marian.

Grayslake Central 2, Woodstock 0: At Woodstock, Maddie Moan had seven kills and three blocks to lead the Blue Streaks in their nonconference loss to the Rams, 25-18, 25-22.

Elgin Academy 2, Alden-Hebron 1: At Elgin, Melanie Nielsen provided eight kills, six blocks and four aces for the Giants in a nonconference lost. Taylor Horton had six digs and six assists. Zoe Deeringer added five digs and five assists for A-H (5-2).

BOYS GOLF

Richmond-Burton 169, Burlington Central 175: At Sycamore Golf Course, Jackson Bolman led R-B (5-3, 3-0) to the KRC dual meet victory with a 2-over 38.

Connor Lindley shot 39, while Hunter Volkmar and Ryan Eskuri each shot 46s.

Marengo 190, Harvard 197: At Marengo Ridge, Brady Cannon shot 43 to lead the Indians past the Hornets in their KRC dual match.

Justin Oine shot 46, Tyler Nelsen shot 48 and Will Fischer had a 53 for Marengo.

Jake Chupich led the Hornets with a 45, Ray Gerhardt had a 48 and James Crout and Hunter Gratz had 52s.

Crystal Lake Central 162, Dundee-Crown 176: At Turnberry Country Club in Lakewood, Eric Klutke shot 36 to give the Tigers (1-4) an FVC dual victory over the Chargers (0-6).

Quinn Hankins (40), Bayden Hubacher (41) and Kolbe Wallin (45) had Central’s counting scores.

Jake Zirlin led D-C with a 41, followed by Matt McQuillen (43), Alex Matsas (45) and Joe Knapp (49).

Huntley 153, Hampshire 159: At West Dundee, the Red Raiders’ Jack Wagner fired a 1-under 34 to lead them past the Whip-Purs in their FVC dual match at Randall Oaks.

Trevor Book shot 37, Danny Sheedy shot 39 and Jake Burnquist had a 43 for Huntley (3-2).

Mark Spitzer led Hampshire (0-5) with a 37, followed by Craig Bracke (40), Justin Heusmann (40) and Aaron Staszewski and C.J. Lindquist (both 42).

Cary-Grove 162, Jacobs 171: At Foxford Hills in Cary, C-G’s Trevor Beaugureau and Jacobs’ Garret Tighe both shot 39s to tie for low honors in their FVC dual.

The Trojans won with a 40 from Trevor Brandona 41 from Cole Seeger and a 42 from Patrick Tobin.

The Golden Eagles had a 43 from Tom Slowick.

Marian Central 166, St. Viator 168: At Woodstock, Quinton Urban and Andrew Lydon each shot 38 as the Hurricanes won their East Suburban Catholic Conference dual match at Crystal Woods.

Bennett Arza shot 44 and Brogan Pivnicka shot 46.
