A Wonder Lake garage was heavily damaged overnight in what officials are investigating as a suspicious fire.
The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District was dispatched shortly before midnight Thursday to the 7400 block of Hickory Trail for a reported garage fire.
The fire started in the attached garage and caused some smoke and fire damage to the home, according to McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Sandra Rogers.
A couple in their 90s was home at the time, and neighbors awakened them and got them out of their house, Wonder Lake Fire Department Deputy Chief Mike Weber said.
The fire caused about $90,000 in damages and no one was injured, he said.
The incident is being treated as suspicious, and an investigation is ongoing, he said.
“There has been a little bit of a crime spree that happened in the subdivision [Thursday],” Weber said. “We are not sure yet, but we are treating it as a suspicious fire right now.”
Late Thursday night, between seven and 10 cars were broken into, and another car was stolen in the same subdivision where the fire occurred, Weber said.
He did not have the exact times of the incidents.
The suspect crashed the stolen car and was sent to the hospital, Weber said.
The General Store in Greenwood also was broken into late Thursday, he said.
“Unfortunately, we were vandalized in the middle of the night,” General Store owners wrote on the business’ Facebook page. “We are now open. Cash only.”
Weber did not have the suspect’s name and couldn’t confirm whether all the crimes were committed by the same person or group of people.
Officials with the Wonder Lake and Crystal Lake fire departments and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incidents.
The Wonder Lake Police Department could not immediately provide more information.
