Mechanical failure causes Woodstock car fire, officials say

A mechanical failure led to a fire that engulfed a man's SUV Friday night in Woodstock, authorities said.

The man had been driving his SUV about 10:30 p.m. Friday on Queen Anne Street near Charles Road when he noticed the check-engine light was on, Woodstock Fire/Rescue District Lt. Mike Brinkman said.

"By the time he got to Allendale [Road], he saw flames coming from his dashboard," Brinkman said. "He quickly pulled over and got out of the car."

By the time firefighters arrived at the scene, the SUV was on fire. The vehicle was a total loss.

"There was no reason to suspect anything suspicious," Brinkman said. "When something like that happens, we usually call it a mechanical failure."
