Johnsburg School District 12 officials have issued a warning to parents after a suspicious incident Monday in Wonder Lake.
Children were playing outside about 5:30 p.m. Monday in front of a house on Barnard Mill Road in Wonder Lake when a woman in an older black sedan stopped at the end of the driveway and called out to the kids, District 12 Superintendent Dan Johnson said in a note to parents Tuesday.
The woman was described as heavy-set with shoulder-length white hair, possibly in her 60s. She may have been wearing a purple shirt, Johnson said.
The suspect asked the children to “come here” several times before an older sibling called the children inside, Johnson said.
The car then left and slowly drove west on Barnard Mill Road.
“This message is not intended to alarm you,” Johnson said in the note. “It is meant to inform and remind you to talk with your child/children about the importance of being safe, to not communicate or go with any strangers and always be on the look out for suspicious behavior.”
Johnson encouraged parents to talk to their children about “stranger danger.”
McHenry County Sheriff’s deputy Sandra Rogers said an investigation into the incident is ongoing, and she encouraged anyone with information to contact the department, particularly those with video cameras that show Barnard Mill Road.
