To the Editor:
“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” (Malcolm X)
Education is an investment. The investment for health and well being as a society. An investment in our community/local business and industry. An investment in our home values.
I’ve been in the educational system going on my 30th year (all in McHenry).
I see the kids and families that put education as the No. 1 priority. Much like many other communities, this town values family and education. I ask, “If we have a poor educational system, how would our families thrive?” We’re lucky that we have two public school districts that are strong.
We face the decision to maintain/upgrade our East and West Campus High Schools in McHenry. Leave the buildings and curriculum as is or make the decision that will enhance the curriculum, add classroom space, add STEM type labs and upgrade current building/land needs.
Yes, the community could take the couple hundred dollars that a household might save if we all vote no. Or the community votes yes and we enhance the educational system in our community.
The deal is this, the average household is still going to have a tax reduction with this plan. What the school board and community would like to accomplish is extend (purchase bonds) at a smaller dollar amount. The buildings need to be maintained and upgraded. Vote yes so that our community can prepare for the future, today.
