To the Editor:
Sean Casten, the Democratic candidate for the 6th Congressional District, is a far better candidate than incumbent Republican Peter Roskam. Casten will make a thoughtful, issue-based and bipartisan congressman. Roskam can’t run on the issues, so he resorts to half-truths and, in some cases, outright lies.
On health care, Roskam says he is a leader. He neglects to say he has voted several times to abolish the Affordable Care Act, which would have cost 30,000 constituents their health insurance and millions more nationwide. He has worked to cut back on Medicare and programs to help the poor, and he has supported a cutback on pre-existing conditions. He is proud of the tax bill, for which he was a key drafter.
The bill has not helped people who need money the most while his bill has overwhelmingly helped the rich and corporations that have used the money to buy back stock, making the rich richer. He also has cut back drastically on deductibility of state and local taxes, which has hurt many in his district.
He follows his mentor, the president, 94 percent of the time. He is wrong on many issues, including the environment, women and senior issues, and many more about which Casten will stand up to the runaway president, while Roskam would remain a certified Trumpite.
