To the Editor:
McHenry County has a contract with ICE to house detainees at the adult correctional facility. That contract generates $8.2 million for the county’s general fund.
A question, at the League of Women Voters Forum (Oct. 11), was asked of the candidates for County Board whether they supported the ICE contract.
There are questions that need to be answered before you can say yes or no.
1. Is the sheriff’s office following the Trust Act, which has been signed into law?
2. Does the county have the authority to ensure the sheriff’s compliance?
3. Are detainees being held here as a result of the Trump Administration’s “zero tolerance” policy?
4. Does the ICE contract allow the county discretion on policy so that the county is not dragged into legal disputes resulting from the department of ICE actions? To put it simply, does the County Board have sufficient control of this contract to assure the citizens of McHenry County that they will not be part and parcel to actions governed by ICE, to which we have no control and which would go against our moral norms?
