To the Editor:
Abortion does end a human life. When a sperm and egg unite, the result is life, a human life. This is a scientific reality! That life in the womb cannot become anything else, example: a tree, a dog, fish, etc.
Cecile Powell is right, though, Jesus did not “say” anything about abortion. He did ask us to love one another as He has loved us. (John 13:34) How did He love us? By sacrificing Himself to give us life, a share in His divine life.
When Jesus, who received His name when His life began in the Virgin Mary’s womb, He was able to bless John the Baptist in the womb of his mother, Elizabeth, when Mary visited her cousin, Elizabeth.
Read in Luke 1:39 that after Mary was told by the Angel Gabriel in the previous verses, that her older relative had conceived a child in her old age, she went visit to Elizabeth [see Verse 41]. “When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting the infant leaped in her womb and Elizabeth filled with the Holy Spirit cried out, in a loud voice, “blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb.”
Both infants were fetuses. John about three months from being born and Jesus, only a few weeks as a fetus. As a people, we abhor the mistreatment of animals, even those raised for food. How can we sustain ending the life encased in a woman’s womb and call it supporting women’s health? Abortion is painful for the growing child, sometimes through saline injection, others through dismembering.
We who are pro-life/respect life are not out to punish women who seek abortions, but to help them with options to continue the life begun in them. What a shame that while women are seeking to grow babies in test tubes, our country is killing future adoptions.
