A Wonder Lake man who officers stopped for minor traffic violations now faces felony charges after police said they found about 2 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle.
Fox River Grove police pulled over 21-year-old Enrique C. Contreras on Oct. 1 on suspicion of driving on a suspended license and driving without insurance, according to citations filed in McHenry County court.
During the stop, police smelled a strong scent of burned marijuana and searched Contreras’ vehicle, Fox River Grove Police Chief Eric Waitrovich said.
The search yielded about 2 pounds of marijuana packaged in various ways throughout the vehicle, Waitrovich said.
Officers filed a criminal complaint against Contreras on Oct. 15, and continued to investigate the matter before arresting him Monday.
Contreras, of the 7900 block of Hill Drive, is charged with possession with intent to deliver between 500 and 2,000 grams of marijuana and possession of marijuana.
If convicted of the most serious charge, possession with intent to deliver, he could be sentenced to as many as seven years in prison.
Contreras remained at the McHenry County Jail on Monday evening on a $63,000 bond, meaning he would need to post $6,300 bail to be released.
He is expected to make his first court appearance Oct. 29.
