More than 24,000 cast early ballots in McHenry County

Voters have come out in droves to cast an early ballot, with numbers comparable to early voter turnout for the 2016 presidential election, McHenry County Clerk Mary McClellan said.

More than 24,117 people voted as of Wednesday, with five days still remaining for early voting, McClellan said.

The county clerk’s office even has had to equip some polling locations in Lake in the Hills and Crystal Lake with additional equipment to combat the long lines of early voters, she said.

“I think it’s the contested races that are driving people to the polls,” McClellan said.

Appearances by more prominent public figures, such as former Vice President Joe Biden rallying for Democratic 14th Congressional District candidate Lauren Underwood in St. Charles, also likely have encouraged voters to hit up the polls, McClellan said.

“It’s democracy at its best is when people actually participate in it,” she said. “I’m excited. I go through all this every single time hoping this is the case, so I hope the momentum doesn’t slow down.”

By this time in 2016, 40,430 people in McHenry County had cast early ballots for the presidential election, according to a county report.

The clerk’s office is receiving an average of 2,200 completed ballots a day, McClellan said. The number of votes cast by mail almost has doubled, as well, she said.

If that pace continues, this election’s early voter turnout is projected to be on par with 2016’s, McClellan said.

“I think there’s a different dynamic going on in Illinois, and that is that people believe they have a voice, and people want to have a choice,” she said.

A new security measure that requires election judges to initial every ballot that is cast provided an early setback. When judges forgot to initial the ballots, the machine did not recognize and accept them.

“We’ve worked all that out,” McClellan said.

Through Monday, residents can vote at 10 additional locations throughout McHenry County during select hours.
