The Woodstock Square comes alive at the holidays with traditions that draw visitors, families and community members year after year.

Favorite events, all free to the public, include horse-drawn carriage rides, The Dickens Carollers, the Christmas Tree Walk at the Woodstock Opera House and expanded Lighting of the Square activities the day after Thanksgiving.

There is no fee to participate, and families, organizations and businesses are encouraged to submit their designs of edible gingerbread structures and decorations in any theme they desire. Ribbons are offered in a number of categories: children (age 10 and younger), family, civic group and business.

Winners will be announced at the Lighting of the Square on Nov. 23.

Entry forms with detailed instructions are available on the Friends of the Old Courthouse website at www.friendsoftheoldcourthouse.org.

Entries must be submitted from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the courthouse.

The houses will be available for viewing beginning at 4 p.m. Nov. 23.

The display will continue through Dec. 25 during open hours for the Old Courthouse Arts Center – from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Friends of the Old Courthouse is actively soliciting sponsorship from area businesses.

The group promotes restoration efforts at the city’s Old Courthouse & Sheriff’s House complex.
