Letter: We're at war

To the Editor:

I am writing this before the fall elections, but it will likely not appear until the voting process has ended. Only one submission is allowed in a two-week period, and I sent another in just last week. Much ado surrounds the referendum to eliminate the road district in McHenry Township. What’s the big deal, you ask, townships only account for a small portion of our property taxes, most of it goes to the schools? And what if the proponents of elimination are wrong, it’s not cost-effective, that portion of our bill soaring ever higher? In answer, I have but two words: So what?

We’ve got to start somewhere. If we’re wrong on this one, we’ll be right on the next. Government in Illinois is out of control, with way too many taxing bodies. The naysayers always will have an excuse for things to go on just the way they are, most of them are past or present employees of the public sector or financially benefiting from it in some manner. Taxes keep escalating, and not just those associated with property ownership. I’m waiting for the city of Crystal Lake to announce no increase in its annual levy, only to raise the sales tax. Taxes are taxes, it makes no difference where one pays them.

Our colonist forefathers bemoaned taxation without representation by the British, went to war over it, but are we any better off with those who legislate us? They get in office and could care less about the common man, spend most of their time pointing fingers at the other party over their joint inefficiencies, and tell outright lies just to stay there. They’re beholden to big business and unions, those furnishing the majority of their campaign funding.

But there are many more of the forgotten than there are those with fat wallets. The only way we’ll get equitable treatment is to get out and vote, kick the bums out of office. March to the polling place, our battlefield, if we don’t show up, we’ve got nobody but ourselves to blame for losing the war.
