Huntley, Lake in the Hills offering Christmas tree disposal

Huntley residents will have several options to dispose of their Christmas trees this year, but one of them aims to recycle the trees to benefit the village.

The Huntley Park District will be recycling trees to be used as mulch in the village’s parks.

Interested residents should bring their trees, free of tinsel and other decorations, to Sun Valley Farm at Betsey Warrington Park, 12209 Main St., by Jan. 31. There is no charge for the service.

MDC Environmental Services began picking up discarded trees Wednesday and will continue to do so throughout the month for all residential areas except Sun City and apartments.

Tinsel and decorations do not have to be removed, as these trees will be taken to the landfill, but any tree larger than 10 feet in height must be cut in half.

For Sun City residents, Waste Management will be picking up trees during the month of January.

These trees also will be sent to the landfill, so decorations do not need to be removed.

Trees can be a maximum of 6 feet tall.

Both MDC Environmental Services and Waste Management pickups come at no charge.

Flood Brothers, Lake in the Hills’ waste hauler, also began collecting Christmas trees and other holiday greenery Wednesday.

The service is free for the month of January, but participants must remove all tinsel, lights, ornaments, nails or other decorations from the tree before putting it on the curb.

For information, call Flood Brothers at 630-261-0578.
