High school boys basketball: Toussaint scores 24 as Skyhawks cruise

BURLINGTON – Johnsburg guard Zach Toussaint displayed his full repertoire in a first quarter that would have made a good highlight video.

The 6-foot senior drove to the basket, was fouled in the air, double-pumped and banked in a shot as part of a three-point play.

Then, he handed two assists to forward Joey Comstock, the second on a slick, no-look pass from the top of the key to under the basket.

Later, there were a pair of deep 3-pointers and another dish to forward Gibson Groves.

“You have to be ready at all times. You don’t know if he’s going to shoot or pass,” Comstock said. “It’s awesome. He’s an amazing teammate.”

Behind Toussaint’s 24 points, the Skyhawks cruised past McHenry, 65-30, on Saturday at the Burlington Central Martin Luther King Classic. The win ended a two-game skid for Johnsburg (10-7), which lost to Waubonsie Valley, 53-46, on Wednesday at Burlington, then fell to Woodstock, 79-76, on Friday as the Blue Streaks tossed in 13 3s.

“We came out really focused and needed this one to get back on track,” said Toussaint, who was 8 of 14 on field goals with four 3s. “Last night after the game me and the captains sat down with coach [Mike Toussaint] and really focused on what we need to do better to change the season around. We know we’re a lot better than what we’re showing right now.”

Johnsburg got a running clock with a 30-point lead early in the second half against the Warriors (1-20).

“I was proud that they came out and were focused,” Mike Toussaint said. “Everybody wants to beat us. People look at Zach and it’s a mission, everyone’s trying to stop him. I feel like we see the best from everybody. We need to consistently come out and give our best.”

Zach Toussaint is averaging 25.5 points a game and raised his career total to 1,919 points after Saturday, second all-time among area players to Crown’s Gary Gliesmann, who graduated in 1981 with 2,011 points.

“It feels good to know my teammates have been with me all these years and have constantly been passing to me and giving me the confidence to shoot it, and not complaining about how many shots I’m taking,” said Toussaint, who will play at NCAA Division II West Texas A&M next season.

Toussaint fired a one-handed pass through traffic to forward Jacob Gutierrez for a layup in the third quarter. Then, Gutierrez, who has played with Toussaint since fifth grade, returned the favor the next time down the court on the fast break.

“It’s really nice because he draws so much attention,” Gutierrez said. “Sometimes two or three players. He spreads it around and gets you the ball.”

Comstock added nine points and six rebounds. Reserve guard Stan Thill hit a pair of 3s and scored eight.

Adam Benton led the Warriors with seven points.

On Monday, McHenry plays Lyons at 5 p.m.; Johnsburg faces Hampshire at 6:30 p.m.
