Boil order activated after Union water main breaks

A pair of water main breaks in the village of Union left residents without water for hours Tuesday and forced village officials to activate a boil order.

While fixing the breaks, crews discovered a leaking valve and had to turn off water flow to fix it, said Gary Zickuhr, the village's water commissioner.

Zickuhr advised that all residents planning to consume tap water bring it to a rolling boil for at least five minutes before drinking.

The boil order will remain active until village officials notify residents that the order has been lifted.

Water samples soon will be on their way to a laboratory for testing, Zickuhr said. The process will take at least 24 hours from the time the samples arrive.

Zickuhr said he likely will be unable to deliver the samples until Wednesday.
