Crystal Lake-based School District 155 plans $14.5M in upgrades

District 155 schools gearing up for summer construction projects

Schools in Community High School District 155 will get major upgrades this summer.

The board recently approved
22 major summer construction projects across the district’s four high schools and the district office. The cost will be $14,552,000.

Jeremy Davis, District 155’s assistant superintendent of finance and operations, said the majority of the 2019 capital improvement projects are necessary for basic maintenance and upkeep of district facilities. A handful of the projects are designed to improve learning environments.

Each district building will receive different improvements.

Cary-Grove High School, 2208 Three Oaks Road, Cary, will replace its tennis court, remodel its learning kitchen classroom, add air conditioning in the science wing and revamp a parking lot with new exit configurations, along with receiving facilities condition assessment work.

Crystal Lake Central High School,
45 W. Franklin Ave., will undergo asbestos abatement, the final phase of a water line replacement, facilities condition assessment work, clock intercom system replacements, door/hardware replacements, remodeling of a learning kitchen classroom and air conditioning in the English wing, among other things.

Prairie Ridge High School,
6000 Dvorak Drive, Crystal Lake, will receive facilities condition assessment work, water temperature mixing valve installation, heating and air conditioning improvements and remodeling of a learning kitchen classroom, among other things.

Crystal Lake South High School, 1200 S. McHenry Ave., will see the replacement of a sidewalk near a school entrance.

The district office, 1 S. Virginia Road, will get a new roof; heating, ventilation and air conditioning improvements; lighting replacement; and facilities condition assessment work.

“With the approval of these projects, we will be able to provide enhanced learning facilities for our students and staff without increasing the 2018 operating tax levy,” Davis said. “The feedback we received from students, staff and parents during our strategic planning process this fall focused on the need to improve our facilities.”

Construction will begin at the end of the school year. Tennis court work at Cary-Grove will start in mid-May, but it will not be disruptive to the students, Davis said.

Davis said the district also will publish summer construction videos on its website and social media channels to inform taxpayers and the community of the projects’ progress.

He said the district fielded requests for air conditioning at two high schools.

“We heard air conditioning kind of a lot,” he said. “We were able to work air conditioning into our plans for the upcoming summer for about 20 classrooms divided between Crystal Lake Central and Cary Grove, our two facilities without air conditioning. That’s been a positive.”

He said students at Cary-Grove also will be safer with the new parking lot exit configuration.

“If you’ve been there either after school or at a football game or something, it can be a little chaotic,” he said. “It’s a good opportunity for us to work with the village of Cary and improve our safety for our students, staff and community when they’re coming out of that parking lot.”

Davis said the district is confident that the improvements will be completed over the summer.

“We’ve only got a certain number of days in the summertime, and we use them all,” he said. “We’ve started planning now and before now. We’ve been planning since before probably the fall of 2018. ... We use the entire summer.”
