The American Occupational Therapy Association selected Michelle Ponsolle-Mays to receive the Jeannette Bair Writer’s Award during its national conference April 6. Mays co-authored the article “Enriching kids’ lives: Addressing the effects of poverty on the health and well-being of school-aged children and their families,” which appeared in an issue of OT Practice on May 21.

“It is exciting that the AOTA is recognizing the important work that is being done with children and youth,” Ponsolle-Mays said. “This article describes how OTs can provide system-level support in schools, notably by designing programs and environments that build student resilience and moderate the effects of adverse experiences.”

Ponsolle-Mays serves as Community High School District 155’s lead occupational therapist and related services facilitator. She provides services to students at Haber Oaks Campus, and her role requires her to help students participate in school activities as well as collaborate with staff to design and implement effective instructional programs and practices.
