The McHenry Planning and Zoning Commission on Wednesday will consider McHenry High School District 156’s request for improvements tied to November’s successful referendum.

The district hopes to build a 64,000-square-foot addition to McHenry High School – West Campus on the north side of its existing facility. It also plans to expand the campus’ parking lot, according to city documents.

The changes are tied to the district’s plans to teach freshman students at McHenry High School – East Campus and move all sophomores, juniors and seniors to West, which is on a 46-acre site on Crystal Lake Road.

Voters in November approved a referendum that allowed the district to issue $44 million in bonds to execute the proposal, which will include renovations to both buildings, the north side expansion and the completion of a science, technology and manufacturing center at McHenry West.

Renovations will address priority life and safety improvements on both campuses, district officials have said. Life and safety reports on the two buildings showed the need for about $41 million in repairs over 10 years, according to a facilities report provided by the district.

The district also will complete the renovation of its tennis courts and get rid of its mobile classrooms.

The parking lot expansion project will add 224 parking spaces – for a total of 874 spots – to accommodate additional students and teachers from McHenry East, according to city documents.

McHenry West has been operating at its location since 1969. District 156 most recently had a total enrollment of 2,221, with 1,427 students at McHenry West and 794 students at McHenry East, according to the Illinois State Board of Education.

McHenry West will be able to accommodate 2,000 students after the expansion, according to city documents.

The commission will hold a public hearing before it considers the request. Officials will make a recommendation on the proposal, which ultimately must go before the City Council.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the McHenry Municipal Center, 333 S. Green St.
