High school boys track and field: Marengo's Schirmer shines with 4 wins at McHenry County Meet

Huntley takes team title; Cary-Grove finishes 2nd

HUNTLEY – Marengo’s Finn Schirmer had a large number of supporters in the stands at Red Raider Stadium to watch him run in the McHenry County Boys Track and Field Meet Thursday night.

Schirmer’s backers, other fans, coaches and runners from around the county saw one of the more memorable performances in the meet’s history.

Schirmer won four individual events – the 100 and 200 meters, the 110 high and 300 intermediate hurdles – to score 40 individual points. It was the first time a male athlete accomplished that feat since 1990 when Crystal Lake South’s Eric Yopp won both hurdles races and the long and triple jumps.

Huntley’s boys ran away with their eighth consecutive team title with 1521/2 points. Cary-Grove took second with 74 points, and Woodstock North with 731/2 points. That was North’s highest finish in the school’s 10 years.

Schirmer set records in the 110 highs (14.12) and the 300 intermediates (37.62) by wide margins and should be a force in next month’s Class 2A State Meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

“It was awesome,” Schirmer said. “I had a really good support group here for me. I had friends who don’t even run track or play spring sports. My whole family was here, my dad could make it, my coaches, I had a lot of support.”

Schirmer repeated as champion in the 110 highs and 200.

“It’s a testamant to all the hard work he puts in,” Indians coach Brad Wignes said. “He has some natural talents, but he works very hard and he’s made progress since his freshman year. It’s pretty impressive. I’m really proud of him.”

Huntley swept the relays and also got firsts from Ian Geisler (1,600), Alex Pitrone (shot put), Michael Benner (pole vault) and Josh Guyer (high jump) in the field events. The team of Antonio Passarelli, Zach Tepper, Kevin Adams and Paul Kerber won the 4x100 and 4x200 races. Passarelli also was second to Schirmer in the 100 and 200.

The Red Raiders’ Jeremy Roe, Chris Simek, Geisler and Jadon Conroy won the 4x800.

Woodstock North picked up firsts from Austin Zieman (long jump), Elijah Pena (triple jump) and Aidan Filetti (400).

“The kids asked me about a half hour ago, when’s the last time we were this high (in team standings)?” Thunder coach John Fredericks said. “I said, ‘Never.’ Our kids really did a nice job and have shown well.”

Schirmer did not run the 300 hurdles last year, but broke the meet record in that race by 1.38 seconds. He broke the 110 hurdles record by .48.

“The 300s are pretty good,” he said. “I ran the 4x400 last year, my endurance from that really helps. I ran that 14.12 last year at sectional against Freeport’s Deion McShane. That was a great race. I’m glad I could bust that out tonight. It was fun.”
