A McHenry man is dead after a Tuesday afternoon crash in Johnsburg, police said.
The Johnsburg Police Department and the McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded to a reported two-vehicle crash about 12:25 p.m. Tuesday. The crash happened at Johnsburg/Wilmot and Ringwood roads, Police Chief Keith Von Allmen said.
Harry Demopoulof, 89, of Trevor, Wisconsin, was driving his 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis south on Johnsburg Road. Witnesses said he didn’t stop at the stop sign at the intersection and collided with the second vehicle, Von Allmen said.
Robert Neel, 69, of McHenry was eastbound on Ringwood Road in his 2008 Chrysler minivan. He stopped at the stop sign and proceeded through the intersection when his van was struck, Von Allmen said.
Neel was pronounced dead at the scene, Von Allmen said.
Demopoulof was taken to Northwestern Medicine – McHenry. Von Allmen didn’t know the extent of his injuries, he said.
Demopoulof was cited with disobeying a stop sign.
The investigation is ongoing by Johnsburg police and McHenry County Major Crash Investigations Unit.
The intersection was shutdown for several hours while police completed a preliminary investigation.
The McHenry Police Department sent out a Nixle alert warning drivers to avoid the area about 1:40 p.m. and announced the reopen of the intersection about 4:15 p.m.
