High school boys track and field: Woodstock North makes history with 1st sectional title

Thunder finish 18 points ahead of R-B; Marengo’s Schirmer wins 4 events

WOODSTOCK – Woodstock North’s Aiden Filetti limping across the finish line in the 4x400-meter relay in fifth place was not the ending the Thunder anticipated.

North, seeded first by more than two seconds, expected to add another entry to its state-qualifying list from the Class 2A Woodstock North Sectional Meet Wednesday night. But Filetti appeared to cramp up in the final lap and was attended to on the infield after he finished.

The gloomy mood did not last, however, as North accepted the sectional trophy from Thunder AD Brady Stromquist, North’s first in school history, and considered its accomplishments.

“We’re trying to figure out if we need a bus driver (for state) this year,” Thunder coach John Fredericks said.

The Thunder finished with 105 points, Richmond-Burton was second with 87 and Marengo was third with 74. Marengo junior Finn Schirmer was the individual star, winning the 100 and 200 meters, along with the 110 high and 300 intermediate hurdles.

R-B’s Mike Kaufman also advanced in four events, the 100, 200, 4x100 and 4x200. North’s Elijah Pena won the triple jump with a career-best 44-7 1/4 and finished second to Schirmer in both hurdles races to qualify. He would have made a fourth with the 4x400.

“It’s pretty amazing,” Pena said. “As a team we’ve worked very hard this season and only lost to a few teams. I’m proud of the guys working hard every day in practice. We definitely deserve it and it feels great.”

Fredericks thought Filetti, who qualified in the 400 and with the 4x100 relay, might have accidentally been clipped from behind and broken stride, then cramped up with about 250 meters remaining. Filetti was in the lead at that point.

“A first sectional title is awesome,” Fredericks said. “The kids have been great all year, the weather’s been bad. We got a great night and they shined. We broke school records with times that we didn’t even come close to all year. It’s the perfect time to do it.”

Schirmer took three top-four medals at state last year and is looking to improve on that.

"The 300 was a good race, I was glad I could come out and be powerful in that," said Schirmer, who ran 37.94. "The 200 I went out there and executed."

North’s Austin Zieman and Luke Duenas went 1-2 in the long jump and the Thunder will have long jumpers at state for the first time.

Marian Central’s Ryan Jones won the 3,200 early, then came back late to win the 1,600. Marian’s Peter Walsdorf was second to Jones in the 3,200.

Marengo’s Aaron Shepard, who was fifth in the Class 2A high jump last year, cleared 6-4 to win that event.
