District 200: Woodstock High School student taken into custody after injuring classmate with box cutter

Woodstock police took a 15-year-old high school student into custody after he assaulted a classmate with a box cutter, school officials said.

A fight broke out Tuesday morning in a Woodstock High School classroom that resulted in one student injuring another with a box cutter, Woodstock Community Unit School District 200 spokesperson Kevin Lyons said. The students, both 15 years old, were arguing over a cellphone, Woodstock Deputy Police Chief Ray Lanz said.

“Administration immediately detained the student and the school resource officer arrived shortly after the assault,” Lyons said in an email. “Police took the student into custody and transported him to the Woodstock Police Department.”

The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Lyons said.

“Because the incident was isolated between two students and resolved immediately, the building was not placed on lockdown and students continued the day according to their normal class schedule,” Lyons said.

Lanz said charges are pending for the alleged attacker, who was sent to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center.

The student will be suspended for the remainder of the school year and could face disciplinary action “up to and including expulsion,” Lyons said.
