High school sports roundup for Tuesday, May 21

Crystal Lake South sophomore Dominic Guzman fired a three-hitter as the Gators defeated Johnsburg, 5-0, in the semifinals of the Class 3A Crystal Lake South Regional baseball tournament Tuesday.

Guzman struck out eight, walked two and threw 100 pitches as No. 4-seeded South won for the 11th time in the past 12 games.

South (22-10) is playing in 3A for the first time this postseason. Johnsburg, seeded 13th, finished its season at 12-15.

Nick DiBenedetto, Jacob Bimbi and Ian Gorken each had an RBI for the Gators. Henry Tipton doubled and scored a run.

The Gators will play in Saturday’s 11 a.m. championship game against the winner from the other semifinal between No. 5 Vernon Hills and No. 12 Woodstock North. They play at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

SOFTBALL

Huntley 15, Auburn 0 (4 inn.): At the Class 4A Harlem Regional in Machesney Park, Briana Bower threw a one-hitter over four innings as the No. 2-seeded Red Raiders (29-7) rolled over the Knights.

Huntley advanced to Friday’s 4:30 p.m. championship game against the winner from Wednesday’s semifinal between No. 3 Harlem and No. 7 Rockford East.

Sofia Tenuta was 3 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs for the Raiders. Teagan O’Rilley was 2 for 2 with a homer, a double and two RBIs. Reese Hunkins had a double and two RBIs, Grace Lucilli Kutz was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Marley Reicher was 2 for 3 with three stolen bases and two runs scored.

Barrington 12, Dundee-Crown 0 (5 inn.): At the Class 4A Barrington Regional, the Fillies’ Kat Stagnito ended the game in the fifth inning with a three-run homer. D-C finished at 8-21.

Lake Zurich 11, Crystal Lake Central 3: At the Class 4A Barrington Regional, Hailey Geske drove in two runs, and Baylee Snell brought home another for the Tigers (10-19), who lost to the Bears in their semifinal game.

Richmond-Burton 14, St. Viator 7: At the Class 3A St. Viator Regional in Arlington Heights, Peyton Kupsak knocked in four runs, and Caitlin Pruitt and Kaitie Regnier each drove in three as the No. 2 Rockets (18-14) defeated the No. 14 Lions.

Kupsak was 3 for 4 with a double, Regnier was 3 for 5 with a double, and Jesse Klicker was 3 for 4 with a double and one RBI. Pruitt and Bella Spittler both had two hits.

R-B plays the winner of Wednesday’s semiflnal between No. 7 Harvard and No. 10 Marian Central in Saturday’s 11 a.m. championship game.

Crystal Lake South 19, St. Edward 1 (4 inn.): At the Class 3A Burlington Central Regional, the No. 1 Gators (30-2) picked up their 30th win of the season with their semifinal win.

Emily Sulikowski clubbed two home runs and finished with five RBIs and three runs scored, while Brooke Kuffel hit a grand slam and a double to drive in seven runs. She also scored three times. Maddie Bush, Evelyn Smith and Skylar Olsen each had two hits and two RBIs, and Christina Toniolo had two hits and an RBI.

Alyssa Niketopoulos struck out five and allowed one run on five hits.

South will play either No. 3 Burlington Central or No. 7 Elmwood Park for the regional title at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Marengo 14, Woodstock 1 (5 inn.): At the Class 3A Marengo Regional, Dani Hartmann went 3 for 3 with a homer, a double and five RBIs in the semifinal for the No. 4 Indians (21-15).

Grace Houghton had two doubles and scored twice, Hannah Ritter tripled as part of a two-hit game with an RBI and two runs scored, and McKenna Skow and Lauren Aubry each drove in two runs. Brooke Berhens struck out seven and allowed one unearned run on three hits in five innings.

Marengo advanced to play No. 5 Woodstock North or No. 12 Lakes for the regional title at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Woodstock finished the season with a 7-18 record.
