High school sports roundup for Wednesday, May 22

Woodstock North's Ellie Thurow tossed a no-hitter Wednesday to lead the fifth-seeded Thunder to a 10-0 win in five innings over No. 12 Lakes in a Class 3A Marengo Regional semifinal.

Thurow struck out 12 of the 16 batters she faced with the lone Lakes' base runner reaching on an error.

Abby Hartmann, Mackenzie Salazar, Mykenzie Selof and Mackenzie Spung all hit home runs for North (15-14-1), which will play No. 4 Marengo for the regional title at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Salazar and Spung each had two RBIs and scored twice. Hartmann had two hits and scored three times, Thurow and Selof each drove in two runs, and Hayley Matteson had an RBI.

Hampshire 6, Belvidere North 2: At the Class 4A Belvidere North Regional, the No. 4 Whip-Purs scored three runs in the first inning on their way to a semifinal win.

Katie Del Re recorded six strikeouts and surrendered two unearned runs on eight hits. Del Re also had a triple, drove in a run and scored twice.

Shai-Ann Currie knocked in two runs, Morgan Haefling had two doubles and an RBI, Miki Snider doubled and scored twice, and Alyssa Cork drove in one.

Hampshire (16-18) will face No. 1 Hononegah for the title at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Prairie Ridge 12, Vernon Hills 1 (5 inn.): At the Class 3A Vernon Hills Regional, the No. 11 Wolves pulled off the upset against No. 6 Vernon Hills in their semifinal behind two homer runs by Emmie Farnam.

Farnam finished 3 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Nichole Kiddy also drove in three runs, and Maggie Schremp had two RBIs. Jillian Minutillo was 2 for 2 with a double, two RBIs and two runs while also picking up the pitching win.

Prairie Ridge (8-17) advanced to Saturday's 11 a.m. title game to face No. 3 Grayslake Central.

Marian Central 4, Harvard 2: At the Class 3A St. Viator Regional in Arlington Heights, the No. 10 Hurricanes defeated the No. 7 Hornets in a regional semifinal.

Marian (17-16) will take on No. 2 Richmond-Burton for the regional title at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Johnsburg 13, Ridgewood 0 (5 inn.): At the Class 3A Antioch Regional, Megan Patterson drove in five runs and Kate Linkletter knocked in four more as the No. 9 Skyhawks routed No. 8 Ridgewood in their semifinal matchup.

Patterson had a triple and two doubles, while Linkletter was 2 for 2 with a homer, double, two walks and four runs scored. Tess Wright doubled twice with two RBIs and two runs, and Leah Kottke had two hits and scored three times. Addison Mass, who also had two hits, struck out five for the win.

Johnsburg (13-14) plays No. 1 Antioch for the title at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

BASEBALL

Cary-Grove 2, Crystal Lake Central 0: At the Class 4A Grant Regional in Fox Lake, Quinn Priester tossed a shutout to lead the No. 2 Trojans past No. 7 Central.

Priester needed only 78 pitches to get through seven innings. He struck out seven with three hits and one walk.

LJ Waco and Harry Heinisch each drove in a run for C-G (21-13), which awaits the winner of No. 3 Grant and No. 5 Streamwood in Saturday's championship at 11 a.m.

Dean Mlaka had two hits for Central (13-21).

Huntley 17, Rockford Jefferson 0 (4 inn.): At the Class 4A DeKalb Regional, Kyle Maurer was a single shy of the cycle as No. 1 Huntley romped past No. 10 Jefferson in their semifinal.

Maurer drove in three runs and scored three times. Aj Henkle also came close to the cycle, going 3 for 3 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored. Jackson Broom went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs, Jake Lyon had two hits and two RBIs, and Michael Talesky was 3 for 3 with an RBI and three runs.

Eli Paplanus struck out seven in three innings, and Christian Kasal struck out the side in the fourth.

Huntley (27-9) moved on to the regional championship at 11 a.m. Saturday to play No. 4 Belvidere North or No. 7 DeKalb.

Vernon Hills 5, Woodstock North 3: At the Class 3A Crystal Lake South Regional, the No. 12-seeded Thunder saw their season end with a semifinal loss to No. 5 Vernon Hills.

Jacob Laha knocked in two runs for North (11-17), Dustin Herrmann had two hits, and Bryce Nolan had an RBI.

Prairie Ridge 18, Marian Central 3 (4 inn.): At the Class 3A Prairie Ridge Regional, the top-seeded Wolves scored 13 times in the first inning to beat No. 16 Marian in their semifinal game.

Michael Patterson had two hits, including a home run, and drove in five runs. Ben Harris doubled twice with three RBIs and two runs, Jared Lindquist had three RBIs and scored three times, and Luke Fiantago had a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Joey Fitzgerald drove in two runs for Marian (5-14).

The Wolves (26-9) will play No. 7 Antioch or No. 9 Wauconda for the regional title at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Carmel 16, Woodstock 0 (4 inn.): At the Class 3A Richmond-Burton Regional, No. 14 Woodstock fell to No. 3 Carmel in the semifinals.

Evan Bridges, Logan List and J.T. Wormley each had a hit for the Blue Streaks (8-17).

Grayslake Central 10, Harvard 0 (6 inn.): At the Class 3A Grayslake Central Regional, the No. 15 Hornets (6-16) dropped their semifinal game against No. 2 Grayslake Central.
