A Woodstock man was arrested Friday after he tried to lure a child near a lemonade stand into his vehicle, police said.
Police responded to the incident about 12:50 p.m. at Foxmoor Road and Yorkshire Drive in Fox River Grove, Fox River Grove Police Chief Eric Waitrovich said.
After John Emerson, 31, tried to lure a child into his vehicle, the child ran away and alerted an adult, Waitrovich said.
Emerson fled and was involved in a hit-and-run crash in Crystal Lake before being stopped in Woodstock, Waitrovich said. Fox River Grove police had put out a notice to other area departments about the suspect.
Woodstock police took Emerson into custody, and he was sent back to Fox River Grove police before being taken to the McHenry County Jail, Waitrovich said.
Emerson was charged with child abduction, luring a child and resisting arrest, according to Waitrovich and online jail records. He said there were multiple children at the lemonade stand, but it appeared there only was one child Emerson tried to kidnap. His most serious charge, a Class 4 felony, could result in up to three years in prison.
It was not clear why Emerson was in Fox River Grove, Waitrovich said.
Crystal Lake and Woodstock police could not provide more information Friday night.
Editor's note: An earlier version of this story listed a different charge for Emerson, based on inaccurate information given by police. He is charged with child abduction, luring a child and resisting arrest.
