The Crystal Lake Police Department has joined an application that provides the community with real-time local crime and safety information.
Crystal Lake police are partnering with the Neighbors app by Ring, an Amazon home security company that offers safety devices such as video doorbells, according to a news release.
The app can be used to share crime and safety-related information and safety alerts from neighbors, local law enforcement and the Ring team, according to the release.
The company approached the police department which sparked the partnership.
“It was an additional way for the community to communicate with the police, so we joined,” Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Thomas Kotlowski said.
This comes at no cost to the police department.
The police department will not have access to the address of users, or any videos unless shared by the individual on the Neighbors app, according to the release.
“We see Ring-style home security devices as a modern day virtual neighborhood watch program, which can improve neighborhood safety by enhancing the flow of information between the residents and police,” Kotlowski said.
The app is Android and iOS compatible, can be used by anyone and will offer communication with more than police – allowing neighbors the ability to notify each other about problems in their area.
