A Carpentersville man has been charged with attempted murder after authorities said he stabbed his employer, who remains in the hospital.

Juan J. Rivera, 35, of the 2100 block of Tepee Avenue in Carpentersville, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, armed violence and aggravated battery, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Rivera, who worked for the alleged victim’s roofing business, called the man Tuesday morning asking to get paid, Kane County prosecutors said. The two met at 9 a.m. outside Rivera’s home. While the victim was seated in the driver’s seat of his car, Rivera reached through the car window and stabbed him, according to the release.

The stabbing was unprovoked, prosecutors said. The victim was stabbed in his left chest and his right hand with a serrated knife with a blade longer than 3 inches, according to the release. The man required life-saving treatment and remained in the hospital as of Wednesday evening.

The Elgin, East Dundee, West Dundee, Barrington Hills, Sleepy Hollow and South Barrington police departments assisted Carpentersville police, the release stated.

Associate Judge Keith Johnson on Wednesday set Rivera’s bond at $800,000. If he posts bail, he cannot have contact with the victim or witnesses in the case, consume any intoxicating substances and must surrender his guns and Firearm Owner's Identification card, according to the release.

Both attempted first-degree murder and armed violence are Class X felony charges, which could result in up to 30 years in prison.

Rivera’s next court appearance is set for June 26 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
