28-year-old wanted in connection with stolen credit card used to buy gift cards

Police have issued a warrant for a Crystal Lake man accused of spending more than $1,000 with a credit card he allegedly stole from a vehicle that was parked in a Catholic church parking lot.

Christopher Rivera, of the 700 block of Concord Drive, is charged in McHenry County court with fraud and burglary. Rivera, 28, is accused of stealing a credit card May 16 from a juvenile’s vehicle while it was parked at Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1023 McHenry Ave., Crystal Lake, according to a criminal complaint.

Crystal Lake police could not immediately be reached to comment on the charges or provide further details.

Rivera allegedly used the stolen card to spend about $1,100 in food, gift cards and other merchandise at stores throughout Crystal Lake and Woodstock, according to the complaint.

Some of the larger purchases were made at Walgreens, 305 S. Eastwood Drive, Woodstock, where Rivera allegedly bought a $355 gift card, and at Jewel-Osco, 145 Eastwood Drive, Woodstock, where he’s accused of buying about $710 worth of gift cards, according to the complaint.

A warrant has been issued for Rivera’s arrest. If he were to be convicted of either of the felony identity theft or burglary charges, he could be sentenced to as many as five years in prison.

Rivera also used the card at Crystal Lake Smoke and Vape, 129 N. Main St., and That’s Amore Pizza, 105 N. Main St., Crystal Lake.
